In the early 90s I got introduced to metal and was immediately hooked. Main heroes from that period were Metallica amongst others and Slayer and Megadeth also soon followed.

But with the progressing age of these iconic bands, the music of these once metalgods started to decline.

Slayer pretty much still does what they did 20 years ago, playing it loud and fast. But especially Metallica makes mediocre crappy rock music nowadays.

But sometimes something happens that reminds you just how good these bands used to be and why they’re regarded as the founders of the trash metal genre.

In 2010 what some thought would never happen, actually happened. The biggest trash metal bands of the 80s namely Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax sharing one show. Announced as the ‘big four’ it set these four metal bands together on one stage at one time at one location.

The concert was filmed and broadcast live to selected cinemas all over the world and later released on DVD in two versions. A regular 2-disc release and a limited edition box version.

It’s an excellent marketing trick and it worked because it created quite a hype last year and I also fell for it by buying the DVD of the show. The version I have is the limited edition box.

The Limited Edition box contains the following on top of the 2-disc DVD:

  • 4 cards depicting the 4 bands, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth
  • A booklet with photos from the event
  • 4 CDs for each the bands with the audio recording of the show
  • A poster
  • A ‘big 4′ guitar pick

The box overall looks pretty nice with lots of goodies. And it actually was a limited edition seeing that it’s sold out at most of the stores and e-stores.

If you’re an old school metal fan, then how can you miss out on this box?
