BEGINNER'S Guitar buying guide

GO OUT AND GET ONE

If you want to play guitar then the first step is to actually go to music store and buy a guitar.

Or don't go out and order it online. But it's better to try the guitar first, so going out to a music store is the best option.

Long have I thought about getting a guitar but never did I actually do something with it until a few years back.

There's no excuse if you really want to. No money is not an excuse. Start taking action to actually have enough money (e.g. saving up, cutting expenses, getting a better job etc.). So, if you really want to play a guitar take action to actually buy one!

Once I had made the decision that I would actually get a guitar the next question was of course which one? There are numerous guitars out there and deciding which guitar you should get, especially a first guitar, can take up quite some time and can perhaps even be a bit frustrating if you don't know where to start, what to pay attention to etc.

WHY THIS GUIDE

When I was looking for my first guitar there was so much information overload I simply got lost. That's why I set this guide up to help the first time buyer who knows absolutely nothing about guitars.

With this guide I can hopefully provide some pointers what to pay attention to when you're about to buy your first guitar. I'm was very happy with my first guitar, but if I had the knowledge that I have now, I definitely would've chosen another one as a first guitar and I'll explain later why.

ACOUSTIC VS ELECTRIC

There are a couple of choices you need to consider if you decide to buy a guitar (aside from determining your budget). The most important decision is whether you will get an acoustic or an electric guitar. Because I think acoustic guitars are for sissies I'll only discuss the electric guitar, see the acoustic vs electric section why. So, once you've decided that you want an electric guitar you still need to consider the following:

  1. 1. Will it be one with single coils or double coils (a.k.a. humbuckers)
  2. 2. Will it be with or without a tremolo (i.e. the handle you see on some guitars below the strings) - THIS SECTION IS NOT READY YET
  3. 3. What kind of amplifier will you get - THIS SECTION IS NOT READY YET
