Hollywoordreporter reports that Leonardo Dicaprio and Warner Bros are developing a live action version of the anime classic Akira. I don't know how much of this stoy is true, but the thought of a live action Akira is interesting at a very minimum. Everyone who has seen Akira has to admit that visually it's quite appealing and I'm very curious to see how that will be translated as a live action movie. So I do hope a live action version gets made.
Today Tosihiba officially announced it is pulling the plug out of HD-DVD, and thus clearing the way for rival Sony's Blu Ray - the next gen DVD.
Though I'm a fan of the DVD medium I haven't been following the HD-DVD/Blu Ray development, simply because I don't care. I'm happier IF a serie gets released rather than on what format it is released. For me DVD is more the ok, and at this point I don't care for the so-called 'much better image and sound' of the HD medium.
But I am glad the format war of HD DVD vs. Blu Ray is finally over, and hopefully companies can go back to focus on releasing cool stuff on DVD or Blu Ray. And even better start brining out some cool gift sets on Blu Ray. If they do, then perhaps I'll start considering switching. And also if they take away the region protection which is still present on Blu Ray - useless crap.
February the 17th will see the return of the Knight Rider, this time as a TV movie. NBC posted (another) teaser trailer for this flick last week or so. I used to be a fan of the TV series, and even owned my own little KITT toy car. Normally I would be excited to see a movie adoption of this classic TV series. But when I saw the first pictures of the new KITT I honestly thought the new car looked older than the original KITT. The fact that this will be a TV movie, and not be shown in cinemas is perhaps also a hint of the quality of this movie. But guess we'll have to wait another week to see the final result.
Last year Takara released a couple of cool iPod based Transformers, including a docking station for the iPod based on the G1 Optimus Prime toy. This year Takara is going to re-release the Optimus docking station, but now with Optimus' in his original G1 color scheme. And on top of that, the head has a new mold which much closer resembles Optimus' face like that in the cartoon. Images courtesy of Seibertron.com
At Hasbro.com there's a really cool clip of the classic Optimus Prime vs. Megatron fight from the original Movie, redone in CGI style. In this case I must say that the clip looks pretty cool. Not sure if I'd want to see the entire movie redone in CGI though.
A few years back the Galaxy Rangers were released on DVD with 4 volumes, each a 1-disc containing a few episodes in random order. According to TVShowsOnDVD the coming year (May 2008 to be precise) Koch will finally release a collection, with the episodes in production order and in a nice package for the first 32 episodes.
Included will also be extras and a booklet. Good to see in 2008 we'll also be getting new cartoon releases on DVD!
