The Ultimate Optimus
As a kid I was quite a fan of the original Transformers. And now that I`m two decades older, I must admit that I still find the Transformers pretty cool. Fortunately Transformers` makers, Hasbro and Takara, also feel the same way and up till today numerous merchandise for the Transformers have been released.
From the two companies, the Japanese Takara without a doubt releases the coolest items. One of their coolest Transformers item has to be the Masterpiece Optimus Prime which they released last year to tie in with the 20th anniversary of the original
Transformers. I originally had missed out on this big bot. When it was released it quickly sold out, and got OOP. No wonder actually, because it is definitely one of the coolest Transformers items to be released in Transformers history.
But last week one my favorite anime shop - Archonia - apparently still had one left in stock. So now I`m also the proud owner of one of the best Optimus Prime figures till date.

When it was originally released there were numerous reports stating how cool this figure is. And all I can say, is that all the reports were true.
First of all the Masterpiece Optimus Prime is quite big. At approximately 12" he`s certainly a lot bigger than his original toy counterpart. The most eyecatching features are the die-cast parts, it rubber tie-ers, the accesoires, the likeness of his face to that in the cartoon, a closed in matrix and more.

One of the coolest things is of course the die cast parts. But don`t get too excited if you think it`s all diecast. Optimus` lower legs (the blue part) and his torso are made of die cast. His arms, head and upper part of the legs are plain plastic. Nevertheless, with the die cast parts this Optimus weights almost 2 kgs. The tie-ers are made of rubber, which makes the truck ride real smoothly. Also the back tie-ers have suspension, giving it even more realism.

Enclosed in Optimus` chest one can find the well known Matrix of leadership first introduced in Transformers the Movie. A very nice detail. What`s even cooler, is that the Matrix can actually light up when you push the button next to his head. Also the Matrix can be taken out of the chest and opened just like in the cartoon.

His body is multi poseable. His hand have 5 fingers that can all be moved separately. Also his head is moveable in various ways, just like his mouth moves for example like in the cartoon. Optimus comes with his standard riffle. But included is also a mini megatron in weapon mode, and just like in the pilot, an orange battle axe to be placed on his hand.

And no Transformer is a Transformer unless he can transform. And this Optimus certainly can transform to his well known truck mode. It does take some time to figure out how to actually transform the thing, because it`s slighly more elaborate than that the transformation of the original toy. But when done, the truck looks just as cool as Optimus in his robot mode as a realistic looking truck, complete with a driver`s seat.

In believe in June of this year a reissue will be released by Takara. If you`re a Transformer fan, or just want one Transformer, get this one because no Transformer collection could be complete without this one. Hasbro BTw has also released a Masterpiece Optimus last year. But don`t be fooled by its appearance or name, because it is not the same as the Takara version. The Hasbro version for example is made entirely of cheap plastic, while Takara`s has die cast parts. Also Takara`s version comes in a nice box, while Hasbro`s comes in a plain with plastic clamshell.
